Systems Administrator

What is it?

A Systems Administrator is an employee charged with administrating and supervising a computer system or many computer systems, set up in a network.  They are in charge of common software, data sharing,  and the proper maintenance and upkeep of the network as well as individual workstations and servers.  A Systems Administrator also often works on a higher level than regular technical support staff, dealing with problems that are more complex than a Technical Support specialist.

How is IT involved?

Information technology is the main concern of the Systems administrator.  They need to ensure that all of the individual computers, and servers, as well as the network are functioning properly, and as such, need to work on computers frequently, as well as occasionally do some light coding.

Where can I see it?

Systems Administrators are a large part of any major corporation, as they ensure that the company's computer systems and networks are functioning on a day-to-day basis.  They are less involved with the planning of the systems, and more involved with the maintenance and upkeep of existing systems, and demands of the various software and hardware needed to run them on a daily basis.

A good example of Systems Administration at work is whenever someone has a computer crash at work.  The crash itself will be logged, studied, and problems addressed without a regular user even pressing a button.  Redundant networks and quick responses to network downtime are also evidence of a strong Systems Administrator at work.

How can I be a part of it?

A Systems Administrator needs to work quickly and on demand at a variety of different problems, and needs a broad expertise concerning software, hardware, networks and mathematics.  In addition, strong communication skills, programming skills and language skills are well-desired for a great Systems Administrator.  People who love solving issues quickly, and have an abiding interest in computer systems would do well as a Systems Administrator.
